Ummagma wins Alternative Eurovision on Amazing Radio
May 24, 2013
Ummagma have won the Alternative Eurovision on Amazing Radio, hosted by Dani Charlton, beating off some stiff competition from 21 countries to claim the victory for Ukraine with winning track '1+1=3'. The duo currently have two songs in the Scottish New Music Chart ('Human Factor' at #16 and 'Rotation' at #26).
Cementing their global appeal still further, on May 23, Ummagma released 'Back To You' and 'River Town' as a split EP with Finnish post-rock band Virta on the Italian Som Non-Label.
Ummagma are a Canadian/Ukrainian duo who create beautiful shoegaze/dreampop a la Cocteau Twins and Mew. Last July, they simultaneously released two debut albums, which sounds like a strange thing to do, until you listen to them. Their self-titled debut is a collection of immersive ambient soundscapes which combines the early experimentations of Eno & Fripp with the aforementioned hazy melodicism of Cocteau Twins and The Sundays. ‘Antigravity’ adds further shoegaze elements, perhaps more in keeping with the likes of Mazzy Star and Stereolab. Sure to please fans of early 4AD output and the early 90s dreampop/shoegaze heyday, Ummagma are making waves across the globe and are definitely worth a listen.
